Course details

Our fire extinguisher training course is designed to ensure that participants are suitably instructed in the safe use of fire extinguishers, fire hose reels and fire blankets.

This course combines theory with practical exercises, preparing participants to recognise and assess emergencies, contain them safely, use first response equipment, and follow facility reporting procedures.

Training is delivered through both a theory and a practical component in accordance with the nationally recognised training unit PUAFER008 – Confine small emergencies in a facility. It supports compliance with relevant workplace health and safety obligations and emergency management standards, helping workers apply safe practices in real workplace conditions.

Target audience

Fire Extinguisher Training is suitable for anyone who may be required to respond to a small workplace emergency or operate first response portable fire fighting equipment. This includes people who attend a facility on a permanent or temporary basis, such as employees, contractors, students, or residents.

It’s designed for:

  • Staff members and fire wardens with designated emergency response responsibilities
  • Contractors and visitors who need to meet site safety requirements
  • Students or residents in facilities where fire awareness is required

This course is relevant across industries, including construction, mining, oil and gas, power generation, manufacturing, health, education, and residential care — any workplace where personnel may be expected to take safe and effective action in the early stages of an emergency.

Course delivery

Face-to-face fire training and assessment are conducted at one of Link Resources’ purpose-built training facilities. Upon arrangement, training and assessment can be conducted on-site at the premises of industry clients, provided there is suitable infrastructure and industry training facilities.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Prepare for and respond to workplace emergency situations
  • Recognise and assess developing incidents and fire types
  • Contain small emergencies in line with workplace procedures and correct firefighting tactics
  • Select and operate first response firefighting equipment safely, such as fire blankets, fire hose reels
  • Communicate and report on emergency actions taken
  • Understand and conduct fire extinguisher safety procedures
  • Respond to and contain chemical spills with spill kits

 

Through hands-on practical experience and guided practice, participants gain the competence to manage the first response to workplace fire hazards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not for every workplace. WHS laws require employers to manage fire risks, and AS 3745-2010 recommends staff receive fire extinguisher training as part of emergency preparedness.

Most workplaces refresh training every two years under AS 3745-2010. High-risk industries may require more frequent refreshers. Workers must follow training schedules set by their employer.

Any worker who has been trained and deemed competent can use one. WHS law also requires workers to follow reasonable instructions and workplace procedures.
