AHCMOM216 – Operate Side by Side Utility Vehicles is a nationally recognised unit of competency that describes the skills and knowledge required to safely operate a side by side utility vehicle (SSUV). This includes carrying out essential pre-start checks, driving and manoeuvring the vehicle safely across various terrains, and following correct shutdown procedures.
The course focuses on the practical application of SSUVs in routine work environments. Participants will learn how to identify and manage common workplace hazards, conduct routine inspections, pre-operational checks and safely operate the vehicle in line with manufacturer guidelines and workplace safety procedures.
Applicable to workers engaged in side utility vehicle operation, this unit supports routine task completion under general supervision. Course delivery
The AHCMOM216 – Operate Side by Side Utility Vehicles course provides participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely operate a side by side utility vehicle (SSUV) in accordance with workplace procedures and safety requirements. This training focuses on the routine use of SSUVs to perform job-related tasks in outdoor and off-road environments. Participants will learn to operate the vehicle under general supervision while following site-specific guidelines and safety protocols. Throughout the course, participants will learn how to:
- Conduct pre-start and post-operational checks to ensure vehicle safety and identify maintenance needs
- Prepare for SSUV use, taking into account environmental impacts, task requirements and site procedures
- Learn safe operation techniques across various types of terrain and in different work conditions
- Navigate a range of obstacles safely, including negotiating slopes, water crossings and uneven ground
- Transport loads safely and understand weight limitations using the vehicle’s designated attachments or load areas
- Learn shut down procedures to safely secure the vehicle following workplace and manufacturer guidelines
- Apply relevant workplace health and safety (WHS) practices during vehicle operation
- Respond appropriately to potential hazards, risks and emergency situations involving vehicle use

Entry requirements
All students must be literate in the English language (no interpreters allowed).
Operators must have the appropriate class of driver’s licence before taking charge of the vehicle and be physically capable of operating the vehicle used to tow/manoeuvre.
At enquiry, students can enter the program by expressing an interest and being sent an information pack that contains a booking notification and course information (Course Brochure). This interest process enables the RTO and client to work together to ensure the course is suitable for them and to identify any additional support needs & make adequate provisions.
There are no pre-requisites for this program.
