Traffic Control Training Course Overview

This Traffic Control course training will provide students with the skills and knowledge required to work as a Traffic Controller with a stop-slow bat in and around active construction and resource sites. For more information on this training package, please visit the link below.

Once all course requirements are completed, you will be issued with a Statement of Attainment. This must be taken (along with the Accredited Traffic Controller Application form and licence application fee) to Queensland Transport, where you will lodge your Traffic Controllers Licence Application.

What do I need to be an accredited traffic controller?

In Queensland, you must be an accredited traffic controller authorised by the Department of Transport and Main Roads. To become accredited, individuals need to complete an approved traffic controller training course and have an open or provisional driver’s licence. You will also need to apply for accreditation through TMR.

If you are already an accredited traffic controller in another state in Australia, you will still need to obtain accreditation in Queensland. While previous training courses may be recognised, this is assessed on a case-by-case basis, depending on the specific course and your experience. It is advisable to contact Transport and Main Roads to explore your options and ensure you have the correct certifications to become accredited.

Already a licensed Traffic Controller and looking to renew your accreditation?

To renew your traffic controller accreditation in Queensland, you are required to demonstrate Currency of Industry Practice as a Traffic Controller and successfully complete the Transport and Main Roads (TMR) approved training program.

Your Traffic Controller Industry Authority Card must be renewed every three (3) years. It is your responsibility to ensure that you maintain current accreditation when performing traffic controller duties.

Target Audience

This Traffic Control course is suitable for those who wish to operate as Traffic Controllers with a stop-slow bat within the Construction, Resources, Transport, and Infrastructure industries in Queensland.
Some industries do not require accreditation to control traffic. These include police officers, escort vehicle drivers, school crossing supervisors, emergency service officers, and car park attendants.

Pre Course Learning

No pre-course learning is required for this unit of competency.

Entry Requirements

Participants will need a basic language and literacy level, as this course requires participants to complete a theory assessment and receive a 100% pass mark.

Construction Induction Card: This course requires holding a Construction Induction White Card (White Card). If you do not have a White Card, you will be able to attend the theory component of the training; however, you will need to provide Link Resources Training with a copy of your White Card prior to commencing the practical training.

Driver’s Licence: It is a requirement for you to have held an open or provisional driver’s licence (Australian or foreign) within the last 5 years (this ensures applicants have an understanding of vehicle manoeuvrability and braking dynamics).

If you do not have a driver’s Licence or a QLD Construction Induction Card, you will not be able to complete your training to be deemed competent to receive your Statement of Attainment.

If the participant is under 18, a parent or guardian must sign the enrolment form on behalf of the student.Students will be required to obtain the following PPE to complete their practical assessment and to wear it as part of the requirements for their final assessment.

Course Delivery

Theoretical Requirements: 1 full day (8 hours) in a classroom with an accredited Traffic Control trainer.

Practical Requirements: 20 hours of on-site placement completed through a licensed traffic control company and signed off by a qualified Traffic Controller. This placement must be completed within 3 months*

Students can complete this practical (20-hour) experience with their own employer, a licensed Traffic Control company they have a relationship with or one of our traffic partners. Talk to us to determine the best option for you.

* Please note: Link Resources Training does not decide on extensions. They will only be granted by Transport & Main Roads under certain circumstances.

Final Assessment: Please note that once your supervisor has signed you off on your 20 hours of Traffic Control, you need to see the trainer one last time to complete your ‘Final Assessment’.

Ring us to book your final assessment. You must bring your completed Log Book (supplied during your theory training) and wear your full PPE.

Face-to-face training and assessment are conducted at one of Link Resources’ purpose-built training facilities. Upon arrangement, training and assessment can be conducted on-site at the premises of industry clients, provided there is suitable infrastructure and industry training facilities. Please note that traffic control training is available only in Queensland. We do not deliver this training in other states.

Outcomes of Traffic control Training

Students who are deemed competent will complete and receive a Statement of Attainment for the following units of competency:

Your training and assessment are recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework, which makes this certification nationally recognised. The Statement is issued by Link Resources Training Pty Ltd (RTO 45483). Once accredited with TMR, you are accredited to undertake traffic control work.

Payment Options

Please note there are additional costs to your course fees that you are responsible for covering. This payment is required when you lodge your certificate with Transport & Main Roads (TMR) to gain your ‘Traffic Control Licence’. This is payable directly to TMR. Please contact TMR for price updates on this licence fee, as it is regularly updated.

How long does the accreditation last?

The accreditation for the traffic control certification is valid for three years. After this period, participants must complete a renewal process to maintain their certification. This ensures that all certified traffic controllers stay up-to-date with current safety standards and best practices.

Can I create traffic control plans with this course?

Unfortunately, no. This course focuses solely on traffic control. To create plans, a traffic management plan must be completed and accredited by Transport and Main Roads for Traffic Management Design. This accreditation enables individuals to design, develop and implement Traffic Management Plans and Traffic Guidance Schemes in accordance with the procedures outlined in MUTCD Part 3.

Do I need an industry authority card?

Yes, an industry authority card is required and must be displayed upon request from an authorised officer. This card serves as proof of your certification and authorisation to perform traffic control duties, ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations.

I need to renew my accreditation, how do I do that?

You must complete a traffic controller refresher training course and complete a Traffic Controller Accreditation Scheme Application Form (F4115). You then must lodge your application and fee at a transport and motoring service centre.
