The 1656 (previously T0911) – Introduction to Electrical Network Infrastructure for Authorised Persons course provides participants with the knowledge required to work safely around overhead electricity cables and network infrastructure. This course provides the accreditation required to apply to Energy Queensland for approval to perform duties as an Authorised Person, in line with section 3.4 of the Code of Practice for Working Near Overhead and Underground Electric Lines.

This course combines theoretical learning with practical activities, building awareness of electrical hazards, safe work practices, and the responsibilities of authorised persons when working near the electrical network.

Training is delivered through both a theory and a practical component and is open to participants who hold an Electrical Mechanic qualification. It supports compliance with industry safety standards and prepares workers to operate confidently and safely in environments where electrical networks are present.

Target audience

This training is suitable for anyone who may be required to act as an electrical spotter or safety observer when working near the Australian Electrical Network. This includes people who attend a worksite on a permanent or temporary basis, such as employees, contractors, or site visitors.

It’s designed for:

  • Staff members working in proximity to overhead or underground electrical assets
  • Contractors and tradespeople required to meet site safety requirements
  • Plant and machinery operators who need a safety observer present
  • Construction and maintenance teams operating near electrical hazards
  • Employees responsible for monitoring and ensuring safe work practices around powerlines

 

This course is relevant across industries, including construction, civil works, utilities, mining, oil and gas, power generation, and infrastructure — any workplace where personnel may be exposed to risks associated with overhead or underground electrical networks.

Course delivery

This course is delivered face-to-face at one of Link Resources’ purpose-built training facilities, where participants complete both training and assessment in a practical learning environment. Upon arrangement with us, training and assessment can also be conducted on-site at the client’s premises, provided there is suitable infrastructure and industry-specific training facilities.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Apply electrical safety and technical knowledge relevant to the type of work and the operation of plant or vehicles near overhead and underground electric lines.
  • Interpret the application and intent of the Electrical Safety Code of Practice – Working Near Overhead and Underground Electric Lines.
  • Describe the difference between Authorised Persons, Instructed Persons and Untrained Persons as outlined in the Electrical Safety Code of Practice – Working Near Overhead and Underground Electric Lines.
  • Explain basic electrical concepts and the effect of electricity on the human body.
  • Identify hazards that may be present and the control measures to be implemented to manage the risks associated with work carried out on or near overhead and underground electric lines.
  • Identify electricity network infrastructure assets, substation components and voltages.
  • Identify exclusion zones applicable to people, vehicles and operating plant for:
    • Various electric line voltages
    • Types of conductors and cables
    • Environmental conditions and
    • Training and authorisations of people on the electricity network
  • State the emergency planning, response and reporting procedures required in the event of an electrical incident or accident.
