RIIWHS204E – Work safely at heights is a nationally recognised course designed for people who work, or are about to work, in roles where they are required to perform tasks at height. It is suited to workers across various high-risk industry sectors such as construction and manufacturing.

The course gives participants the skills and knowledge to work safely in line with industry standards, workplace safety procedures and Victorian requirements.

During the course, participants will cover:

  • Hazard identification and risk control for height-related work
  • Types of work at heights and common site activities
  • Choosing and using height safety equipment

Entry requirements

  • All participants must have sufficient English language skills to read and understand safety instructions, complete assessments and follow trainer directions. Interpreters are not permitted.
  • Due to the physical nature of the training, participants should have a reasonable level of fitness and mobility.
  • People with back, leg, arm or joint injuries may find it challenging to climb, access training structures or wear a harness for extended periods.
  • Students must be physically capable of wearing a harness and working at height during practical components.

It depends on the task, the height, and how long the work will take. Ladders can be appropriate for short-duration tasks where other access equipment isn’t reasonably practicable, but they come with their own WHS obligations around selection and risk control.
