It contributes to the overall efficiency and safety of workplaces, aligning with the broader goal of ensuring high standards of performance across various industries. It is commonly applied across construction, mining, oil and gas, utilities, and other high-risk industries where proof of current competency is required.

Target audience

VOC assessments are completed by workers and supervisors across a wide range of industries where proof of current skills is required for site access or compliance.

The VOC process helps verify competency for current ticketed or licensed workers by assessing whether their existing qualifications align with present-day safety and performance standards.

It’s designed for:

  • Employees who need to demonstrate current competency to meet site or legislative requirements
  • Supervisors and managers responsible for verifying workforce capability
  • Contractors and labour hire personnel entering high-risk or regulated work environments
  • Teams operating plant, machinery, or equipment where evidence of competency is mandatory
  • Individuals returning to the workforce or transferring skills across industries who must validate their ability
  • Meeting insurance requirements that require employees to undertake refresher training for particular tasks

This course is particularly relevant to sectors such as construction, mining, oil and gas, civil works, power generation, manufacturing, and transport, where employers require confirmation that workers can perform tasks safely and to the required standard.

Outcomes of VOC Training

Upon successful completion of the Verification of Competency (VOC) Training, participants will:

  • Possess a thorough understanding of industry-specific competencies.
  • Demonstrate practical skills and knowledge required for their roles.
  • Receive a Verification of Competency certificate issued by Link Resources Training Pty Ltd (RTO 45483).
  • Enhance workplace safety through validated competencies.

Course delivery

Face-to-face training and assessment are conducted at one of Link Resources’ purpose-built, professional training facilities. Upon arrangement, formal training and assessment can be conducted on-site at the premises of industry clients, provided there is a suitable infrastructure and industry training facilities.

This course is tailored to the employee, their day-to-day tasks, and the equipment they operate. As it covers a wide range of tickets, licences, and units of competency, there is no set course outline. Depending on the workplace and role, the assessment may include:

  • Reviewing existing tickets, licences, or logbooks
  • Perform VOC assessments, including practical demonstrations to verify the ability to safely operate equipment in accordance with site requirements.
  • Completing a structured theory assessment to verify knowledge
  • Recording outcomes to confirm if the participant is deemed competent in line with workplace and regulatory obligations

With this flexible approach, VOC assessments provide a reliable way to verify current skills and confirm employees can meet the performance standards expected on site.

Pathways

As VOC assessments are designed to confirm current competency rather than deliver new training, there are no direct study pathways linked to this course.

However, outcomes may guide further development. Participants who are not deemed competent may complete refresher training to address gaps. Those looking to broaden their career opportunities can pursue additional tickets, licences, or nationally recognised units of competency through Link Resources’ training programs.

Frequently asked questions

There is no set national standard for how long a Verification of Competency remains valid. The period is usually determined by the employer, site, or industry requirements. Many companies request VOC assessments every two to three years, or sooner if an employee changes roles, equipment, or work environments.

A Verification of Competency (VOC) in training is an assessment used to provide evidence that a worker’s skills and knowledge are current. It confirms that a person deemed competent can safely conduct work and operate equipment in line with work site and industry standards. Employers use VOC assessments as part of their due diligence or contractual arrangements, helping demonstrate that their workforce is capable of meeting safety and compliance requirements.

To obtain a Verification of Competency (VOC), you need to already hold a current licence, ticket, or qualification for the task or equipment being assessed. The process involves completing a theory component and a practical demonstration to confirm your ability to perform the work safely. An assessor then records the outcome and determines if you are competent.

No. A VOC does not deliver new training. It is an assessment process used to verify that a worker’s existing skills and knowledge are current. However, outcomes from a VOC may highlight the need for refresher training or additional qualifications.

This course and all related training and assessment services are delivered by Link Resources Training Pty Ltd (RTO Provider Number 45483).
