This course means participants are able to operate a powered reach stacker that incorporates an attachment for lifting and lowering a shipping container.

Throughout the course, participants will learn how to:

  • Conduct pre- and post-operational checks and identify any safety or maintenance issues
  • Plan and prepare for reach stacker operations in line with site requirements, safety procedures and routine checks
  • Operate the reach stacker to lift, move and place shipping containers safely and efficiently

  • Shut down and secure the equipment after use
  • Understand load charts, equipment maintenance, weight limits, stability and risk management when using container handling equipment

To legally operate a reach stacker, you must hold an RS High-Risk Work Licence (RS HRW licence class). This licence will be issued by your state or territory regulator after successful completion of the course and relevant assessment by an accredited training provider.

Please note: This licence does not cover the operation of a portainer crane. Separate licensing is required for that equipment.

After successfully completing the training and assessment, you’ll receive a Statement of Attainment. You’ll then need to apply for your RS HRW licence through your state or territory regulator.

For example, in Queensland, you must submit your online application for a new Queensland High-Risk Work (HRW) Licence within 60 days of completing your practical assessment.

Yes, both the theory and practical assessments are included as part of the course. You’ll need to successfully complete both to receive your Statement of Attainment.

Yes. High-Risk Work Licences are valid for 5 years. Renewal is managed through your state or territory WHS regulator.
