Falls are the leading cause of fatalities in Australian construction, and a daily risk across South Australian worksites. From CBD developments and suburban rooftops to Port Adelaide and regional infrastructure projects, the margin for error in this line of work is small and the consequences severe.
This one-day, face-to-face course delivers RIIWHS204E – Work Safely at Heights, a nationally recognised unit covering hazard identification, equipment selection, rescue planning, and WHS compliance. The program combines theory with practical, hands-on training to ensure participants leave with the essential skills and knowledge required to work safely at heights. This course is required for most construction site roles in South Australia where there’s a risk of falling.
Adelaide courses run from our purpose-built training facility in Hendon, conveniently located between the CBD and Port Adelaide. Group and on-site bookings are also available for South Australian businesses with larger teams.

RIIWHS204E – Work safely at heights
This course is for anyone working in, or moving into, a role that involves working at height across a wide range of South Australian industries. It suits construction workers, labourers, roofers, tilers, cladders, scaffolders, formworkers, electricians, solar installers, telecommunications riggers, maintenance crews, utilities and infrastructure workers, mining personnel, council teams, and more who commonly work above ground.
SafeWork SA requires competency-based training for those using work positioning systems, and this course meets that requirement. There are no formal prerequisites, so if your work involves rooftops, scaffolding, elevated platforms, or any situation where a fall could result in injury, this training applies.
If you’re unsure whether it’s right for your situation, call our Adelaide team, and we’ll point you in the right direction.
Our Adelaide-based trainers deliver practical, face-to-face training from our Hendon facility, with options for on-site delivery for businesses across the state.
For companies, we offer flexible group training that can be delivered at your location, allowing your team to complete training in the same environment where they perform work. This approach keeps training relevant, reduces downtime, and helps workers apply what they’ve learned straight back on the job.
No matter the group size, the training is designed to prepare you for the realities of working on-site.
At the enquiry stage, students are sent an information pack that includes course details and booking information. This process helps confirm that the course is suitable and allows any support needs to be discussed.
There are no formal prerequisites for this unit of competency.

Link Resources has purpose-built training facilities all across Australia to meet your specific training requirements.
In most cases, yes. If your role involves a risk of falling, you’re expected to be trained and competent to perform work safely under WHS laws.
On construction sites, this usually means having completed RIIWHS204E, which demonstrates you can carry out height-related tasks in line with safety obligations. Employers typically won’t allow workers on-site without evidence of this competency.
If your work involves rooftops, ladders, scaffolding or elevated platforms, working at heights training is generally expected.
A Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is required for high-risk construction work involving a risk of falling from height.
Currently, this applies where there is a risk of falling more than 3 metres in some housing construction scenarios.
From 1 July 2026, this threshold will drop to more than 2 metres, bringing South Australia in line with national standards. SafeWork SA has advised that businesses should prepare ahead of this change, particularly if teams regularly work between 2 and 3 metres.
Yes. This Working at Heights course is eligible for funding through the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) for approved participants.
Eligible South Australian construction workers may access subsidised training, which can significantly reduce the course cost. Funding availability and contribution amounts can vary depending on your employer, employment status, and CITB eligibility criteria.

Participants work with a range of height safety systems and personal protective equipment, including harnesses, anchor points and ladders. Practical training focuses on how to select, inspect and use safety equipment correctly, implement control measures, and maintain safe access while performing work at height.
You’ll also cover fall protection systems, pre-use checks, and rescue procedures, with all activities aligned to Australian standards and real construction site scenarios.
In most cases, yes. If you’re working as a contractor or subcontractor and your role involves a risk of falling, you’ll be expected to hold current working at heights training.
Completing RIIWHS204E demonstrates your competency to perform work at height in line with site safety obligations, which is often a requirement before you’re allowed on-site. Principal contractors and site managers typically won’t engage or induct workers without evidence of this training.
