What do I need to be able to work in confined spaces?
This Confined Space Entry program is designed to give students the necessary skills and knowledge to safely and competently enter and work in confined spaces. Training and assessment are compliant with AS2865, including but not limited to:
- Applicable Legislations and company confined space procedures
- Definitions and types of confined spaces
- Hazard identification and risk management procedures
- Hazardous atmospheres, including gas monitoring techniques
- Isolation, purging, ventilation
- Roles and responsibilities of the team, including standby
- Rescue equipment and procedures
- Industry case studies
If a worker is required to enter a confined space, a person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) must ensure a confined space entry permit is issued. This permit must be prepared by a competent person and provided to the worker before entry is allowed.

Outcomes of confined space skill set training
After successful completion of your confined space training, you will:
- Obtain a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for all units of competency

Course delivery

Entry requirements
Entry into the confined spaces course requires:
- Literacy in the English language
- Basic physical fitness is required to work safely in confined spaces
- Ability to use PPE correctly, including breathing apparatus if required
There are no academic pre-requisites. If you have special needs, individual training support can be arranged to help meet the learning outcomes and course requirements. Participants should be prepared to engage in practical exercises involving gas testing, hazard identification, and confined space work practices. If the participant is under 18, a parent or guardian must sign the enrolment form on behalf of the student. Students will be required to obtain the following PPE to complete their practical assessment and to wear it as part of the requirements for their final assessment.
- Long Pants with reflective stripes
- Long-sleeved high-visibility shirt with reflective stripes
- Hard Hat with brim
- Steel-capped safety boots
- Gloves
- Safety glasses (sunglasses are okay)
- Sunscreen

Absolutely. This course is designed for both new entrants and experienced workers. It includes foundational theory and hands-on training, so no prior experience is required—just basic English literacy and physical fitness.
While there is no set expiry date, industry best practice recommends refresher training every 2–3 years, especially for high-risk or infrequent confined space work. Many employers will require up-to-date evidence of recent training to ensure compliance.
Confined spaces carry risks that aren’t always present in normal work areas, including toxic or flammable atmospheres, oxygen deficiency, engulfment, and limited ways to get in or out in an emergency.
