Fire Warden vs Chief Fire Warden: Which Do You Need?

Fire warden vs chief fire warden is the comparison most businesses get stuck on once they move past basic fire extinguisher training course requirements. Most businesses know they need fire safety training. Fewer know which course actually applies to which role, or how the courses fit together. Three nationally recognised units sit behind Link Resources’ fire safety offering, and each one serves a different purpose.

Here is how to tell which one your team needs, and how they connect, starting with the course that has no prerequisite at all and working up to the role that leads the whole site during an emergency.

PUAFER008 – Confine small emergencies in a facility

This is the entry point. It covers how to identify and contain a small emergency, such as a contained fire or chemical spill, using a fire extinguisher, fire hose reel or fire blanket. There is no prerequisite, and it suits anyone who might be first on the scene of a small workplace incident, not just designated safety personnel.

Duration: 4 hours face to face.

Most businesses only need the standard version of this course, assessed against PUAFER008. There is also a non-accredited option for teams who want the same practical training without the formal competency assessment, which allows more people into a single session. It is not listed as a separate bookable course online. Call us to arrange it.

PUAFER005 – Operate as part of an emergency control organisation

This course is for the people who take charge of a specific area during an emergency, not just fires, but also bomb threats and chemical incidents. Fire Wardens (and Area or Floor Wardens, under the AS 3745 standard) clear their zone, account for everyone in it, and report to the Chief Warden.

There is no prerequisite for this unit either, but most organisations train Fire Wardens before moving anyone into a Chief Warden role, since it builds the area-level skills the Chief Warden role relies on.

Duration: 4 hours face to face.

PUAFER006 – Lead an emergency control organisation

This is the whole-site leadership role. Under AS 3745, PUAFER006 actually has a formal prerequisite: PUAFER005. Link Resources’ Chief Fire Warden course covers both units in the one session, so you do not need to book Fire Warden separately first. By the end of the day, participants hold both Statements of Attainment.

The Chief Warden is the final decision maker during an emergency: the one who makes the call to evacuate, briefs emergency services on arrival, and directs every Warden across the site.

Duration: 6 hours face to face.

The simplest way to cover your whole Emergency Control Organisation

Because Chief Fire Warden training already includes the Fire Warden unit, and Fire Extinguisher has no prerequisite at all, all three can be delivered on the same day, at any of our facilities, so an employer can train their entire Emergency Control Organisation, from Wardens through to the Chief Warden, in a single day with Link Resources.

What about breathing apparatus?

For businesses in mining, oil and gas, confined space work or other high-risk environments, Breathing Apparatus training (MSMWHS216 – Operate breathing apparatus) is a related but separate course, covering the safe use of breathing apparatus in irrespirable atmospheres. It is not part of the Warden structure, but it is a common pairing for teams who already hold Confined Space Entry certification.
