Course details

South Australia’s mining, defence, and industrial maintenance sectors regularly place workers in confined spaces, oxygen deficient atmospheres, and environments with hazardous gases or vapours. Breathing apparatus is essential equipment in these conditions, and workers who wear it need to be trained to operate, maintain, and rely on it correctly, in line with the Work Health and Safety Regulations 2012 (SA).

Delivered from our Hendon training facility in Adelaide, Link Resources’ breathing apparatus course is a practical, half-day session covering pre-use checks, correct donning and operation, hazard identification, and safe shutdown procedures. You’ll leave with a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment and the skills to operate breathing apparatus safely in high-risk environments.

What You’ll Learn

This course covers the full scope of breathing apparatus operation, from pre-use checks through to donning, hazard response, and safe shutdown, with practical content relevant to South Australia’s mining, defence, and industrial maintenance sectors.

Target audience

This course suits workers across South Australia’s mining, defence, and industrial maintenance sectors, and anyone whose role requires breathing apparatus because they work in a confined space, with hazardous gases or vapours, or in an oxygen deficient atmosphere. In Adelaide and across South Australia, that includes:

  • Personnel from emergency services, emergency response or standby teams, and volunteer organisations
  • Workers operating in remote or high-risk South Australian locations where atmospheric hazards are present
  • Teams that regularly enter confined spaces or areas with reduced oxygen levels, including alongside our Confined Spaces Training course
  • Staff required to wear breathing apparatus during routine or emergency procedures
  • Mining, civil construction, oil and gas, power generation, and maintenance and shutdown personnel

If your role requires you to wear breathing apparatus to work safely in a hazardous atmosphere, this course provides the practical skills and certification to do so correctly.

Our Hendon facility is located approximately 10 km west of the Adelaide CBD, with easy access from Port Road. The Outer Harbor rail line provides public transport access to the area. On-site parking is available.

Entry requirements

All candidates must be physically capable of performing tasks while wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) weighing up to 12kg. There are no pre-requisites for this unit of competency.

Entry into the course also requires literacy in the English language and the ability to use PPE correctly. If you have special needs, individual training support can be arranged to help meet the learning outcomes and course requirements. If the participant is under 18, a parent or guardian must sign the enrolment form on behalf of the student.

Employment Pathways

Upon successful completion, students may seek employment in roles where the use of breathing apparatus is required to safely carry out tasks in hazardous or irrespirable environments. This includes positions such as:

CITB Funding Available for SA Workers

This course is eligible for CITB funding for eligible South Australian workers. The gap fee is $220 per person, with the balance of the course cost subsidised by the Construction Industry Training Board. CITB funding can be selected as an option when you book.

To be eligible, you generally need to be a South Australian resident working in a CITB-approved job role within the building and construction industry (housing, commercial, or civil sector), and hold an approved CITB number. This normally means your employer also holds an approved CITB number and is engaged in building and construction work. Apprentices, trainees, unemployed persons re-entering the industry, skilled migrants with recognised trade credentials, and recent ADF veterans entering the industry may also qualify under CITB’s eligibility policy. Full-time ADF members and labour hire employees placed outside an eligible host employer are not eligible.
