Note: Course price includes vehicle hire. If you prefer to bring your own suitable 4WD, the cost will be reduced by $175 per person. Own vehicles must be roadworthy, registered, insured, fitted with low-range 4WD, and suitable off-road tyres. Participants who choose to use their own vehicles do so at their own risk.

Course details

Field operations across Victoria increasingly require more than a standard driver’s licence. Utilities crews, council and parks teams, environmental consultants, and civil construction workers are regularly assigned to remote or unsealed worksites, and many mine sites and major project employers now require proof of 4WD competency as a condition of site access. The 4WD Skill Set gives workers a nationally recognised qualification that meets this requirement.

Delivered from our Cheltenham training facility in Melbourne, Link Resources’ 4WD Skill Set course gives workers the practical, hands-on skills and nationally recognised certification required to operate a four-wheel drive vehicle safely in the field. Across one day of practical training, participants complete all three units of competency while covering pre-start inspections, off-road driving technique, vehicle recovery, and WHS compliance for field operations.

Target audience

This 4WD Skill Set course is suited to workers whose role requires them to operate a four-wheel drive vehicle in field or off-road conditions across Melbourne and Victoria. That includes:

  • Utilities field crews operating in rural and semi-rural service areas
  • Local council and parks operations staff working on unsealed roads and reserves
  • Environmental consultants and field surveyors accessing remote sites
  • Emergency services and SES personnel operating in off-road conditions
  • Civil construction workers driving to and from remote project sites
  • Mining and resources sector workers requiring site access certification

If your employer or a client site requires proof of 4WD competency before you can operate a vehicle off-road or access a remote worksite, this course provides the skills and nationally recognised certification to meet that requirement.

What you'll learn

This 4WD Skill Set course is practical and hands-on, with scenarios drawn from the field and off-road conditions Victorian utilities, council, environmental, and civil construction workers encounter on the job.

Topics covered include:

  • Pre-start inspection and vehicle checks before entering the field
  • Safe driving technique on steep inclines, declines, and unsealed roads
  • Navigating soft ground, deep washouts, and challenging terrain found on rural and remote Victorian worksites
  • Vehicle recovery techniques for bogged vehicles
  • WHS compliance for field vehicle operations, including risk assessment before remote travel
  • Emergency procedures for remote and off-road environments
  • Site access and entry requirements common to mining, civil construction, and utilities worksites
  • Load and equipment considerations for field operations
  • Communication and check-in procedures for solo or remote field work

Assessment is practical and competency-based, conducted across all three units during the day’s training. Successful completion results in a nationally recognised qualification accepted by employers across Australia.
