From pre-start checks and off-road driving technique to vehicle recovery and field WHS compliance, our Melbourne 4WD Skill Set course gives workers the practical skills and nationally recognised certification required to operate a four-wheel drive vehicle safely in field and off-road conditions.

Note: Course price includes vehicle hire. If you prefer to bring your own suitable 4WD, the cost will be reduced by $175 per person. Own vehicles must be roadworthy, registered, insured, fitted with low-range 4WD, and suitable off-road tyres. Participants who choose to use their own vehicles do so at their own risk.

Course details

Field operations across Victoria increasingly require more than a standard driver’s licence. Utilities crews, council and parks teams, environmental consultants, and civil construction workers are regularly assigned to remote or unsealed worksites, and many mine sites and major project employers now require proof of 4WD competency as a condition of site access. The 4WD Skill Set gives workers a nationally recognised qualification that meets this requirement.

Delivered from our Cheltenham training facility in Melbourne, Link Resources’ 4WD Skill Set course gives workers the practical, hands-on skills and nationally recognised certification required to operate a four-wheel drive vehicle safely in the field. Across one day of practical training, participants complete all three units of competency while covering pre-start inspections, off-road driving technique, vehicle recovery, and WHS compliance for field operations.

Our Cheltenham facility is located approximately 20 km southeast of the Melbourne CBD, with easy access from the Nepean Highway. Cheltenham train station is nearby, with regular services on the Frankston line. On-site parking is available.

Entry requirements

Entry into the 4WD Skill Set course requires:

  • A current, valid Australian driver’s licence
  • Literacy in the English language
  • Basic physical fitness to safely complete practical off-road driving and recovery exercises

 

There are no academic prerequisites. If you have special needs, individual training support can be arranged to help meet the learning outcomes and course requirements.

If the participant is under 18, a parent or guardian must sign the enrolment form on behalf of the student.

Hire Vehicle or Bring Your Own?

There are two options for the practical assessment component of this course.

Hire vehicle, $795 per person
A 4WD hire vehicle is included in the course fee. This is the right choice if you don’t own or have access to a 4WD, or if your employer wants you trained before assigning a work vehicle.

Own vehicle, $620 per person
Bring your own 4WD and save $175. Your vehicle is used for all practical components, which suits workers who will be assessed in the same vehicle they use on the job.

No. A hire vehicle is available for $795 per person. If you have access to your own 4WD, you can bring it and pay the reduced rate of $620.

There is no general legislative requirement for 4WD certification in the same way as working at heights or confined spaces. However, many employers, particularly in the mining and resources sector, require this qualification as a condition of site access or employment. Check your employer’s or client site’s specific requirements.

Many mine sites and major civil and infrastructure projects across Victoria require proof of 4WD competency before a worker can operate a vehicle off-road or access a remote area of the site. If your employer or a client site has this requirement, this course meets it.
