AURTGA001 – Drive and Manoeuvre Trailers is a nationally recognised unit of competency that covers the essential skills and knowledge required to safely operate and reverse trailers using a vehicle across various road and worksite conditions.

This course focuses on building practical towing skills, including coupling and uncoupling procedures, secure load handling, reversing into designated areas, aligning techniques, and performing safety checks prior to operation. Participants will also develop strong road safety awareness, learning how to plan movements, assess risks, and navigate tight spaces safely and efficiently.

This nationally recognised unit is suited to individuals who need to safely drive and manoeuvre trailers in a range of work environments. The training applies to the movement of single-axle or multi-axle trailers across different road and site conditions, with a focus on safe reversing, positioning and securing.

After successfully completing this course, participants will be awarded a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for AURTGA001 – Drive and Manoeuvre Trailers, issued by Link Resources Training Pty Ltd (RTO 45483) under the Australian Qualifications Framework.

This certification demonstrates the participant’s ability to safely operate, reverse and position trailers in line with workplace and road safety standards. It also supports employers in meeting compliance requirements related to vehicle and load movement across various sectors.

Course delivery

This practical training course covers the required knowledge and skills to drive and manoeuvre a trailer while it is attached to a driving vehicle. It involves inspecting the trailer before use, connecting the trailer to a vehicle, driving the trailer, and disconnecting the trailer from the vehicle. The trailers may have non-pivoting axles or pivoting front axles.

Throughout the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the legal and safety requirements associated with towing trailers.
  • Identify and assess different types of trailers and their characteristics.
  • Perform pre-operational checks on trailers to ensure roadworthiness.
  • Attach trailers to industrial and recreational vehicles correctly, considering weight distribution and coupling mechanisms.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in defensive driving techniques and manoeuvring skills in different environments and terrains.
  • Apply practical techniques for reversing trailers safely and accurately.
  • Respond effectively to emergency situations and perform trailer recovery procedures.
  • Comply with relevant road rules and regulations while driving and manoeuvring trailers.
  • Conduct post-operational checks and maintenance tasks to ensure trailer integrity and performance.

Entry requirements

All students must be literate in the English language (no interpreters allowed).

Operators must have the appropriate class of driver’s licence before taking charge of the vehicle and be physically capable of operating the vehicle used to tow/manoeuvre.

At enquiry, students can enter the program by expressing an interest and being sent an information pack that contains a booking notification and course information (Course Brochure). This interest process enables the RTO and client to work together to ensure the course is suitable for them and to identify any additional support needs & make adequate provisions.
