Operate Breathing Apparatus Training Course Overview

Operate Breathing Apparatus Training covers the skills and knowledge required to operate and maintain breathing apparatus and equipment in an irrespirable atmosphere, as defined by the Australian Standard AS/NZS 1715:2009 Selection, use and maintenance of respiratory protective equipment.

This unit of competency applies to operators who are required to wear breathing apparatus because they are working:

  • In a confined space
  • With hazardous gases / vapours
  • In an oxygen deficient atmosphere
  • In other situations requiring the wearing of breathing apparatus

Target Audience

Operate Breathing Apparatus Training is typically completed by personnel from emergency services, emergency response / standby teams and/or volunteer organisations. It is also completed by work groups in remote work locations who regularly enter and work in confined spaces or other areas with potentially hazardous atmospheric conditions. Typical industries where this is utilised include (but are not limited to):

  • Mining Industry
  • Civil Construction Industry
  • Oil & Gas Industry
  • Power Generation Industry
  • Maintenance & Shutdown Industry

Course Delivery

Face to face Operate Breathing Apparatus Training and assessment is conducted at one of Link Resources purpose-built training facilities in Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, and Tasmina. Upon arrangement, training and assessment can be conducted on-site at the premises of industry clients providing there a suitable infrastructure and industry training facilities.

Outcomes of Operate Breathing Apparatus Training

Students who are deemed competent will receive a Statement of Attainment recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework. This Operate Breathing Apparatus Training certification is nationally recognised. The Statement is issued by Link Resources Training Pty Ltd (RTO 45483).

Entry Requirements

All students must be literate in the English language (no interpreters allowed).

All candidates must be physically capable of performing physical tasks while wearing SCBA weighing up to 12kg.

At enquiry, students can enter the program by expressing an interest and being sent an information pack that contains booking notification and course information (Course Brochure). This interest process enables the RTO and client to work together to ensure the course is suitable for them and to identify any additional support needs & make adequate provisions.

No pre-requisites exist for this Unit of Competency.

Training & Education Pathways: After achieving this unit of competency students may undertake a range of associated resources and infrastructure units and qualifications.

Employment Pathways: After achieving this unit of competency students may seek employment in civil, construction, resources, manufacturing, utilities and maintenance industries.
